First Day at Guvi Pre-Bootcamp

After a night long chess marathon, I managed to wake-up and start my day at 9.30am on a rainy friday morning. After a brisk to-do check, I logged-in to zoom to attend the first pre-bootcamp session at Guvi. This was exactly the kind of bootcamp I was looking for. I had come across many bootcamps which unfortunately did not inspire confidence in their efficacy to be an authoritative industry conduit. Backed by my favourite IIT-Madras (..err..I prefer it that way) and IIM-Ahmedabad (…which I secretly envy), Guvi seems like a platform that would be able to comfortably meet top industry standards. After the initial telephonic interaction with the staff before the mandatory leap-of-faith sign-up (@Rs.8500), I was convinced that Guvi was replete with passion for learning, teaching and respect for quality et.al .

The day started at 10AM with 32participants. The session was kick-started by the mentor , who spared no expense at ushering us to the Guvi-Ide. Guvi-Ide is the in-house IDE (Integrated Development Environment) that enables students to quickly work on code, like a coding kiosk. We were briefed of the expectations and possible outcomes of this pre-boot exercise. This pre-bootcamp is expected to bring students of different abilities and backgrounds to a roughly common page. A sample assessment is scheduled on Day8 and the significant Filter Assessment on Day11 which would ensure the student’s fit to the actual boot-camp.

The instructor urged the students to focus on 4 sections of Code Katas (drawing from Katas in Karate) in their prep for the Assessment — Absolute Beginners, Arrays, Math and Strings. Code Katas are basically coding exercises that can sharpen logical ability while working through some basic coding syntaxes.

Over the next couple of hours, we delved into some interesting exercises on arrays with simple console output. While we were suggested to ignore the initial lines of NodeJS code that was used to bootstrap these simple array operations, we focussed on the ensuring that we were able to understand the basic array operations in JavaScript. The BootCamp is expected to chisel out a good full MERN stack developer in us, capable of a decent debut at a reputed tech joint. It was a satisfactory first day as the mentors parted after suggesting the home-work and giving away their contact numbers.

That’s all for now amigos.. more to come..
